Chile Earthquake Response

This past Saturday morning, a major earthquake rocked Chile killing more then 700 people and damaging many buildings and roadways. Just like the response to the earthquake in Haiti, many charities are assisting on the ground in Chile and many donors are looking for a way to help. It's too bad that on your main Charity Navigator you don't list well-established local Chilean organizations such as: "Un Techo Para Chile", "Hogar de Christo", etc since they have a much larger and stronger presence in the country than most of the fine American or International institutions you lists, and a proven track record for doing excellent work in the country.

Hi Tobi's Blog.
At Charity Navigator we only rate organizations that have nonprofit status in the US (although the scope of their work can be international). Therefore, we simply do not rate local Chilean charities. That doesn't mean that they aren't doing good work. But Americans can not get a tax deduction if they give to organizations that do not have 501 c 3 public charity status in the US.
