Japan Giving Update

We posted yesterday that giving to Japan was at $24 million. Today, the Chronicle of Philanthropy says that figure is up to >$47 million. The pace of giving remains slower than after Hurricane Katrina and the Haiti earthquake. Of the charities reporting their fundraising figures, with $34 million in donations, the American Red Cross has raised the most.

What do you make of reports stating that Japan does not want help from the US or from any any other organization? According the Chronicle of Philanthropy, they are working with other Governments to obtain the assistance they need. Should Community Benefit Organizations in the U.S. Continue to fundraise under the pretense of aiding Japan, if Japan doesn't want the help?

There are various opinions on whether or not it is advisable to give for Japan quake and tsunami relief efforts.
At Charity Navigator, we think the scope of the disaster is so great, that the charities that are already involved, and those that will become involved, will play a vital role in the relief effort. There will be significant costs associated with those efforts and so charities will need our support.

As you decide what is right for you, please keep in mind the following:

Some charities are not committing to spending all of the money they raise now for Japan. As the situation continues to unfold, many charities are yet unsure if they will raise more than they need and therefore use the donations instead for future disasters and/or their work in other parts of the world.
