Making It Easier For Donors To Navigate Our Site

At Charity Navigator, we classify charities by the kind of programs and services they provide, and by the way they function financially. We employ a two-tiered classification system that groups charities into:
  • Broadly defined Categories
  • More narrowly defined Causes within each Category

In our commitment to continually improve our classification system, Charity Navigator just expanded its list of Categories from nine to eleven. Effective February 1, 2015, the Category on our site that was called "Public Benefit" was replaced by three new Category titles:
  1. Human and Civil Rights
  2. Community Development
  3. Research and Public Policy

And under Research and Public Policy, we turned one Cause into two thereby creating:
  1. Non-Medical Science & Technology Research
  2. Social and Public Policy Research
We believe this change will make it easier for donors to find their favorite charities among the >8,000 that we currently rate.
