In 2011, the Hungarian Parliament and Government supported and promoted a day to build public support for charity, solidarity, and social responsibility. Through a proposal from Hungary, the United Nations adopted a resolution designating September 5th as the International Day of Charity, to be observed annually by all UN member states.

In its original proposal, Hungary chose September 5th as the preferred date for the day of awareness, to commemorate the passing of Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

The United Nations resolution concludes, "On this International Day of Charity, the United Nations invites all Member States and all international and regional organizations, as well as civil society, including non-governmental organizations and individuals, to commemorate the Day in an appropriate manner, by encouraging charity, including through education and public awareness-raising activities."
