#IntlForestDay

It might only be March 21, but did you also know it is the International Day of Forests!?

Back in 2012, The United Nations General Assembly declared this day to be International Day of Forests. Each year, countries from around the world are encouraged to commit to local, national, and international efforts in organizing various activities having to do with trees and forests. These activities include tree planting campaigns and raising awareness about the importance of all types of trees and forests for future generations to come.

Each year, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests chooses a theme for the International Day of Forests. This year, the theme is Forests and Energy. A few fun facts about the importance of our forests and energy are:
  • Approximately 900 million people, predominantly in developing countries, are engaged in the wood-energy sector on a part-time or full-time basis
  • Strategically placing trees in urban areas can cool the air by between 2-8 degrees Celsius or 35-46 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Globally, forests hold an energy content approximately 10 times that of the world’s annual primary energy consumption. They then have potential as renewable resources to meet the demands of global energy.
