Many of us are already making plans for Memorial Day -- barbecues and picnics with family and friends mark the unofficial start of summer. It’s easy for the purpose of this holiday, a day to remember the sacrifices made by so many service men and women to protect our freedoms, to get lost in the excitement of a (hopefully warm and sunny) day off of work.
Memorial Day is the cornerstone of National Military Appreciation Month which is observed annually in May. This month is set aside to recognize the efforts and sacrifices of our current service men and women and veterans, and remember those who gave their lives to protect our liberties.
There are more than 40,000 charities in the United States providing services to military members and their families, veterans, and the families of service members who have died in duty. Charity Navigator has curated a list of highly-rated organizations serving these groups. Consider making a donation to one of these groups this month to show your appreciation for the members of military, past and present.
