Charity Navigator Celebrates #GivingTuesday

This year’s #GivingTuesday, on November 28th, 2017, will mark the sixth year of the movement! Since the inaugural #GivingTuesday in 2012, the global day of giving has taken its place alongside Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday, empowering individuals and organizations around the world to bring about the change they wish to see. The end of the calendar year has always been a busy time for charitable giving, but the #GivingTuesday movement has amplified the effects of giving season.

#GivingTuesday was founded through a partnership between the 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation to created the movement with the goal of connecting “diverse groups of individuals, communities and organizations around the world for one common purpose: to celebrate and encourage giving.” On #GivingTuesday, 2016, over $177 million dollars worth of donations were made from people in 98 countries.

The spirit behind #GivingTuesday is not only based in generosity but also in the power of social media to connect and inspire (there’s a reason it’s name is a hashtag, of course!). The #GivingTuesday team puts it best themselves on their website “as a global movement, #GivingTuesday unites countries around the world by sharing our capacity to care for and empower one another.” Last year on #GivingTuesday, social media engagements reached nearly 2.4 million.

If you or your organization have not participated in #GivingTuesday in the past, there are plenty of resources available for organizations and individuals. One way for individuals to get involved is by entering the #MyGivingStory contest. Winning entries can earn up to $10,000 for the nonprofit their giving story highlights, along with other possible prizes.

This year’s #GivingTuesday will also mark a change at Charity Navigator! We have partnered with GuideStar, Classy and GlobalGiving to display impact information for over twenty-four hundred rated charities. This collaboration will make it easier for charities to share their results and impact-related information with the largest possible audience.

Charity Navigator is certainly looking forward to this year’s #GivingTuesday and we hope you are too!
