Charity Navigator: The Gift that Keeps Giving — Books!

As the holiday season approaches, many of us are thinking of ways to give to back and help our communities. Fortunately, there are many simple ways to give back and make a difference. Donating useful items that you already have, like books, is a great way to start.

If you have collected a large stack of novels over the years that you’d like to turn into a resource to help others, here are some ideas on how you can get started:

  1. Sell Your Books
You can use the funds generated by selling your books to support the causes that you are passionate about. Not only does it give you more options in terms of organizations that you can support, it also allows the charity to use those funds in a way that best serves its needs.

2. Give Locally
Contact local charities in your area, to see if they accept used books donations. Charity Navigator’s Advanced Search Tool can be a useful place to learn more about the charities in your area. You can also try contacting your local public library to see if they accept books as donations.

3. Donate your Books to a Charity with a Book Collection Program
You can also use Charity Navigator’s Advanced Search Tool to look for organizations that collect and redirect used books in good condition to those who need them, as a part of their mission.

Here are a few examples of highly rated charities that accept books as donations:
