Happy Veterans Day from Charity Navigator

Some of us are fortunate enough to live in towns where Veterans Day is a holiday. Not just a bank holiday, but actually a day that’s uniquely different from every other day. A day of somber remembrance and joyful celebration of what that sacrifice enables. I’m grateful that I live in one of those towns.

Veterans Day Celebration in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.
On November 11, 2017 our Main Street will close. At eleven o’clock, men and women will line the sidewalk.  The center of attention will be a handful of much older men, who on every other morning can be found around the large table towards the back of our diner.  On every other day they are our neighbors, grandparents, and our friends. Today they are our heroes. Today they wear their shiniest shoes and itchiest wool uniforms. They’ll march alongside much younger men and women wearing desert colored khakis. Each will have a story to tell and our entire town will stop to hear them.

The remembrance begins the same way every year.  Our mayor introduces a fourth-grade student who will read "For the Fallen,"a poem by Laurence Binyon. For as long as I have lived here, the entire village has stopped at eleven o’clock on November 11 to hear these words followed by a moment of silence.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Afterwards most of the village gathers in our VFW Hall were lunch is served and over a dozen different veterans assistance organizations assemble to share their work and information on how each of us can better understand and support the rights, dignity, and needs of our veterans.

At Charity Navigator we recognize we aim to elevate the important work of these organizations. We have compiled a list of highly-rated charities providing services to activity duty service members, their families, wounded service men and women, and our nation's veterans. This Veterans Day, take a moment to say thank you to our country's heroes by supporting one of these excellent organizations.
