Charity Navigator Celebrates American Heart Month

Did you know that February is American Heart Month?

The first American Heart Month was celebrated in 1964 by declaration of President Lyndon B. Johnson. At that time more than half of deaths in the United States were caused by cardiovascular disease. Today, through increased awareness and prevention measures, that number has dropped to one quarter of deaths annually. However, heart disease remains the leading cause of death globally.

Charity Navigator’s American Heart Month Hot Topic highlights outstanding charities who are working to elevate the conversation around heart health.

These charities are working to remind us that we can all take simple steps to reduce our risk like making physical activity part of our daily routine, and choosing spices to flavor our foods over salt. Healthy choices coupled with regular check ups to manage existing conditions can significantly reduce, if not eliminate, your risk of heart disease.

They may also provide support services to individuals and families affected by heart disease to help them navigate the impact of the condition.

Consider making a gift to support one of these great organizations in honor of American Heart Month today. Or, check out Charity Navigator’s other Hot Topics to find a list of highly-rated charities working on other important issues.
