Charity Navigator Celebrates Memorial Day

Each year, at the end of the May, we’re given a day off to remember those who sacrificed everything for our safety and freedoms. Acknowledge their bravery, service, and sacrifice by making a gift to a highly-rated organization that is helping active duty and wounded troops, veterans, and their families.

Charity Navigator’s Military Appreciation Month Hot Topic features a list of highly-rated charities that are committed to serving these brave men and women and their families. Keep reading to learn more about a few of them here, then head to the Hot Topic to see the full list.

The Gary Sinise Foundation
☆☆☆☆
Serving honor and need

The Gary Sinise Foundation was established under the philanthropic direction of a forty-year advocate for our nation's defenders, actor Gary Sinise. Its outreach supports those who sacrifice to defend our country: active duty, veterans, first responders, and their loved ones. While our mission is broad, we've created nine key programs to show gratitude for our American heroes through entertainment, family support, and acts of appreciation. The Gary Sinise Foundation works to ensure the sacrifices of America's defenders and their families are never forgotten.

Freedom Service Dogs of America
☆☆☆☆
Free a hero to save a hero

Freedom Service Dogs is a nonprofit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by rescuing dogs and custom training them for individual client needs. Clients include children, veterans and active duty soldiers, and other adults. Their disabilities include Autism, Traumatic Brain Injury, Cerebral Palsy, Spinal Cord Injuries, Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Unlike most service dog organizations, we rescue our dogs, not breed. Our dogs come from various parts of the country and we custom train them to become amazing service dogs. FSD does not have a puppy-breeding or raising program. Our experience is that there are plenty of unwanted dogs in shelters that are eager to get a second chance and a whole new career. Over the course of our 27+ years, we have found that with dedicated training these dogs become heroes to those with disabilities, transforming their lives forever.

Hire Heroes USA
☆☆☆☆ + Impact
Transforming military service into civilian success

Hire Heroes USA empowers U.S. military members, veterans, and spouses to succeed in the civilian workforce. Our team of former military and business professionals effectively trains veterans in the skills of self-marketing, then supports their career search until they find good jobs with great companies. The hallmark of our program is a personal approach where each veteran receives dedicated assistance from a highly-trained staff member in order to help the veteran overcome barriers to employment. Signature services also include group workshops and connecting the job seeker with veteran-friendly companies and employment opportunities through the Hire Heroes USA Job Board.

Operation Gratitude
☆☆☆☆ + Impact
Saying “thank you” to all who serve

Founded in 2003, Operation Gratitude seeks to lift spirits and meet the evolving needs of our Active Duty and Veteran communities, and provide volunteer opportunities for all Americans to express their appreciation to members of our Military. Operation Gratitude annually sends 100,000+ care packages filled with food, hygiene products, entertainment and handmade items, plus personal letters of support, addressed to individual Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines deployed overseas, to their children left behind, and to Veterans, New Recruits, First Responders, Wounded Warriors and their Care Givers. Through Collection Drives, Letter Writing Campaigns, Craft Projects and Financial Donations, Operation Gratitude provides civilians anywhere in America a way to say “Thank You” to the men and women of the U.S. Military through active, hands-on Volunteerism.

Our Military Kids
☆☆☆☆
Providing support to military children

Our Military Kids provides substantial support in the form of grants to the children of National Guard and Military Reserve personnel who are currently deployed overseas, as well as the children of Wounded Warriors in all branches. The grants pay for participation in extracurricular activities and tutoring programs that nurture and sustain children while a parent is away in service to our country or recovering from injury.

As a disabled Vietnam veteran who, over 50 years later, continues to serve fellow 'Nam vets, I have been very proud to have played a small role with a number of very honorable veteran support organizations (Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA), National Service Organization (NSO), Hearts and Homes for Veterans (HHVeterans.com), American Legion, and several others)and have always admired the level of sincerity and devotion applied by Gary "Capt. Dan" Sinise for a long, long time. He's truly an American hero worthy of emulation by all. May he continue to be blessed by God.

I came to this page thru a popup I got while doing my due diligence while considering starting a monthly donation to Covenant House. I find it remarkable that Covenant House spent not one word tooting their own horn here. That they pitched Gary Sinise first sealed the deal- I will begin sending them a monthly donation within a few more keystrokes.
