Highly-Rated Charities in Minnesota

Spoonbridge and Cherry at Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MN.

Charity Navigator spends time each week highlighting a few of the outstanding organizations at work in one of the 50 states. This week we’re talking about some the charities serving the people and communities of Minnesota.

Minnesota is known as “Land of 10,000 Lakes.” In reality, it’s actually home to 11,842 lakes. Perhaps a better nickname would be “Land of 190 Highly-Rated Charities”? Just kidding! That doesn’t make a great license plate slogan, but it is certainly something to be proud of. Keep reading to learn more about a few of the organizations who have earned top marks from Charity Navigator.

Baking bright futures

Sister Jean Thuerauf noticed that teenagers in North Minneapolis needed a safe, engaging place to work that would take them off the streets and provide them with valuable hands-on skills. She cooked up the idea for Cookie Cart in her home, where she would invite teens in to learn baking skills after school. In 1988, Cookie Cart launched officially, and it continues to provide teens in the Twin Cities with lasting and meaningful work, and opportunities to gain life and leadership skills through experience and training in a nonprofit bakery.

Headwaters Foundation for Social Justice (Minneapolis, MN)
☆☆☆☆
Addressing the root causes of injustice

Headwaters Foundation for Social Justice was founded in 1984 by a group of donors who wanted to put grantmaking decisions in the hands of the community. Their goal was to empower individuals and communities who were traditionally excluded from resources and power to access the tools they needed to implement real change. Today, the Foundation seeks to advance equity in inclusion, transform traditional power structures, and build trust in local communities. They do this by equipping communities to stand up, join together, and identify durable, sustainable solutions to their problems. Thus far, they have provided more than $10 million dollars in grants to local communities to advance change.
