Appalachian Voices is a leading nonprofit advocate for a just economy and healthy environment in the Appalachian region and a driving force in America’s shift from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy. They promote diverse local economies and thriving communities and defend the land, air, and water of their region from the worst environmental threats. They work at the nexus of the ongoing shift from fossil fuels to clean, 21st-century energy sources — they fight mountaintop removal coal mining, fracked-gas pipelines and other harms to the people and places of Appalachia, and advance energy efficiency, solar and wind power, and other economic solutions that create community wealth and sustain Appalachia’s mountains, forests, and waters.

Durham Rescue Mission (Durham, NC)

Restoring families & giving hope

The Durham Rescue Mission is Durham, North Carolina’s oldest and largest long-term homeless shelter, providing food, clothing, permanent supportive housing, vocational training, Biblical counseling, job placement, education, accountability and much more to broken men, women, and children in Durham, Chapel Hill and Raleigh. Their doors are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Rural Advancement Foundation International (USA) (Pittsboro, NC)

Dedicated to sustainability, equity, and diversity in agriculture

The Rural Advancement Foundation International (RAFI) believes in order to ensure a safe, adequate supply of healthy food, we must protect farm workers and encourage environmentally sound farming. They see environmental sustainability, economic viability, biodiversity, and social justice as inextricably linked. Therefore, the best way to ensure a just, sustainable future for farming is to create a reality where farmers feel supported and protected and have the resources to thrive. While RAFI’s primary focus is on North Carolina the southeastern United States, they are developing programs to support farmers across America and around the world.

The Winston-Salem Foundation is a 98-year-old community foundation comprised of more than 1,300 funds created by charitable individuals and organizations. Since 1919, individuals, families, and corporations have used their expertise to improve the quality of life in Forsyth County, its surrounding areas, and beyond. They offer personalized service to make giving easy, flexible and efficient; local expertise with knowledge of current community issues to make giving as effective as possible; and community leadership in bringing together diverse voices and groups to address issues, foster greater giving and support high-impact opportunities. Their mission is to invest in our community by making philanthropy and its benefits available to all. 

Friendship Trays (Charlotte, NC)

Delivering nutrition and more to neighbors in need

Since 1976 the mission of Friendship Trays has been to deliver nutritious meals to elderly or infirm individuals in the Charlotte community who are unable to obtain or prepare their own meals. They cook and courier a meal to the doorstep of over 700 recipients. But we deliver so much more than that. They deliver human connection to those that are isolated and lonely. They deliver peace of mind to the families of our recipients. It’s so much more than a meal.
