Highly-Rated Charities in South Dakota


South Dakota is home to 15 highly-rated charities doing exceptional work in communities around the state. Today, Charity Navigator is featuring a few of those organizations.

These charities are working to solve a spectrum of South Dakota's most pressing issues. They are helping children and families while upholding the highest standards for financial health and accountability.

Feeding South Dakota (Sioux Falls, SD)

So no one goes hungry

Feeding South Dakota, whose mission is to eliminate hunger in South Dakota, is the state's largest charitable hunger-relief organization. In 2017, Feeding South Dakota secured and distributed over 13.6 million pounds of quality nutritious donated and purchased food providing 11.3 million meals to more than 190,000 individuals in need. Feeding South Dakota is able to distribute this food from their distribution centers in Sioux Falls, Pierre, and Rapid City through its network of over 400 charitable organizations, supporting over 555 partner agency programs across the state. These organizations then provide this food to individuals who are "food insecure" through youth programs, senior centers, on-site feeding programs, emergency food pantries, after-school programs, and homeless shelters.

Serving vulnerable women, children, and men

The CornerStone Rescue Mission, established in 1981 in Rapid City, South Dakota, serves the physical and spiritual needs of more than 500 people every day and they've impacted the lives of thousands more over the years. Many have gone on to lead fulfilling, independent lives and contribute to the community in many ways. The Cornerstone Rescue Mission is the main provider of shelter and the only ongoing and free source of meals for the homeless in the Black Hills region.

Helping Native Americans living on the tribal reservations in South Dakota

The Native American Heritage Association is dedicated to helping Native Americans living on the tribal reservations in South Dakota. The state of South Dakota is home to some of America's most scenic landscapes, the Badlands, and also the home to the poorest people in the nation. The Association supports the Sioux people through medical, food, fuel, and clothing programs.

Special Olympics of South Dakota (Sioux Falls, SD)

Providing year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports

The Mission of Special Olympics South Dakota  is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Special Olympics takes the mission many steps further by providing free health screenings at their events through the Healthy Athlete program.

Creating opportunities for a better tomorrow

Sioux Empire United Way is changing lives in the Sioux Empire. Their focus is on identifying and responding to needs in the community, creating opportunities for a better tomorrow. They strive to create opportunities for a better tomorrow while ensuring the needs of today are also met. Recent programs, like Starting Strong in the Sioux Empire, strive to ensure their community's youngest members have opportunities to thrive and develop. Genesis is connecting families who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless with volunteer mentor teams that support and provide resources to achieve long-term stability. Their latest initiative, USucceed, provides at-risk high school students with long-term mentors who will encourage school success and preparation for adulthood.
