Take a Stand Against Domestic Violence This October

Ten million people in the United States will be abused by an intimate partner this year. This chilling reality is the reason we observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month each October. This month, which grew out of the Day of Unity founded in 1981, is intended to raise awareness, empower victims, and connect advocates to end domestic violence.

The women’s movement and victim’s rights movement along with the dedicated work of advocates and organizations like the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, National Network to End Domestic Violence, and Domestic Violence Intervention Services, Inc. have helped victims find their voices and shape the conversation to raise awareness of domestic violence and make it a thing of the past.

Last November, Charity Navigator--in partnership with Classy, GlobalGiving, and GuideStar--launched a new initiative to provide Impact Reports for nearly 3,000 charities.

Here’s what a few of the nation’s leaders on domestic violence reported in their impact reports to one of our partners:

National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (☆☆☆☆) is affecting public policy at the state and federal levels to protect the rights and voices of domestic violence victims, survivors, and advocates. They are striving toward a world where there is zero tolerance for domestic violence, and have recently turned their focus to the intersection of domestic violence and gun violence. The Coalition regularly engages its network of 120,000 followers with educational information and updates on public policy to keep them informed and active in the fight to end domestic violence.

National Network to End Domestic Violence (☆☆☆☆) has been vetted by our partner GlobalGiving to confirm the progress of their state, national, and international projects to end domestic violence. The organization conducts an annual census to gain an understanding of how many people are affected by domestic violence each year. They also provide housing and shelter, financial, and legal services to victims. And, they continue to look for innovative ways to use technology to prevent domestic violence and protect and support victims of it.

Domestic Violence Intervention Services, Inc. (☆☆☆☆) provides trauma-informed services to victims of domestic violence to help them heal and move past their victimization. They offer services to victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, adult sex trafficking, and stalking. The organization aims to help victims understand the ongoing community services available to them as they heal physically and emotionally. And, they track their programmatic through ongoing reporting with clients.

These are just a few of the charities working on this issue. You can use Charity Navigator’s Advanced Search Tool and Discover feature to find even more highly-rated charities providing emergency services to individuals experiencing domestic violence, support for victims of it, and advocacy services to make it a thing of the past.
