In 1989, the Boston Marathon, which is a program of a the
nonprofit Boston
Athletic Association, first accepted teams running for charity. That year, runners
raised a total of $6,000. Last year's race donations totaled $21 million.
And with so many people running to support charities related to the 2013
bombing – such as Team MR8 which supports
the Martin W. Richard Charitable Foundation - it is anticipated that this
year's donations will exceed last year's record. It will be interesting to learn the final
fundraising figure after today's race is run.
We wish all the runners the best of luck today!
