The Land of the Free Encourages the Lending of a Penny

The July 4th holiday brings us tons of festivities each year and proves to be one of the more fun weekends of the summer. Sharing laughter and experiences with family and friends, watching the variety of firework shows, and enjoying life at a barbecue are all events that make the July 4th weekend a memorable one whenever it comes around. Independence Day reminds us to be thankful for what we do have, and coincidentally, often inspires people to give to those who don't have.

The freedom of giving has totaled up to $373 billion donated to charitable causes in 2015, posing a 4.1% increase in cash dollars, from 2014. Philanthropy has been a staple of our nation from its beginning, and is clearly, still a huge part of our American and global society today. With all the great benefits that come with donating money to charitable causes, there are also many other ways that you can get involved and choose to give during this time.

Involving yourself in the community is also a great way to make an impact throughout the summertime holiday. Many neighborhoods feature sporting events, fireworks, barbecues, concerts, parades, and countless more events during the weekend of July 4th. Choosing to volunteer your time, efforts, and helping dollars are a few of the ways in which you can bask in the spirit of giving.

Lastly, one of the most important aspects of America’s Day of Independence is honoring the sacrifices made by countless servicemen and servicewomen, past and present. Honoring those who have put their lives at stake to ensure that the inhabitants of this country would be allowed to live in freedom, is nothing short of brave and admirable. Taking the initiative to donate to one of our highly rated charities geared towards veteran and military causes is another way to make sure that your July 4th, is about more than just you.

As a 501 (c) (3) organization itself, Charity Navigator depends on public support to help donors make informed choices. Please consider investing in the future of Charity Navigator by making a donation today.  Donate now >>

Well said. Philanthropy is unquestionably one area in which the USA is a world leader and one in which we should take great pride
