Charity Navigator Celebrates World Humanitarian Day, August 19

Humanitarian (adjective): 1. having concern for or helping to improve the welfare and happiness of people; 2. pertaining to saving of human lives or to the alleviation of suffering

Humanitarian (noun): a person actively engaged in promoting human welfare and social reforms, as a philanthropist

The United Nations General Assembly declared August 19 to be World Humanitarian Day, a day set apart to recognize humanitarian workers and those who lost their lives delivering humanitarian assistance. Charities across the globe are working hard to bring an end to human suffering by providing humanitarian assistance in some of the world’s most troubled areas. In honor of World Humanitarian Day we are sharing a list of several highly-rated humanitarian relief charities. Providing disaster mitigation and preparedness programs in vulnerable communities.

Focus Humanitarian Assistance USA is a highly-rated organization that provides international crisis response and disaster risk management. They provide immediate response to natural and manmade disasters around the world. Additionally, they offer support and risk management services to communities prone to these disasters to help strengthen them for the future. They aim to make communities more sustainable so that over time they will be more self-sufficient and less dependent on long-term aid. They have also created a program to help displaced persons find resettlement opportunities. The organization operates in South Asia, Europe, and North America.

Defending dignity, fighting poverty.

CARE works globally to address the roots of poverty in communities affected by hunger, violence, and disease. They are currently active in 94 countries and serve about 80 million people through more than 1,000 local programs. In their efforts to fight poverty an defend human dignity around the world, this highly-rated organization focuses on empowering women and girls realizing that they are capable of bringing positive change to their communities. They do this by providing them with education and other resources that will help them regain control over their own lives. Additionally, the organization responds to a range of disasters and conflicts by providing immediate and long-term humanitarian relief to struggling communities. Some of the of the charity’s other programs focus on improving health, hunger, and economic development in the often neglected corners of the world.

MAP International, a highly-rated charity, fulfills their mission of providing “health and hope for a hurting world,” by providing life-saving medicines and medical supplies to people living in poverty. Impoverished communities are the world are disproportionately affected by many illnesses and diseases that have long been eradicated in the United States. Providing vaccines and medications to combat these illnesses is just one MAP International’s programs. Additionally, they respond to disasters by shipping in and delivering medicines and supplies to victims susceptible to sickness or injury.
