Charity Navigator Celebrates Universal Human Rights Month

The international community celebrates December as Universal Human Rights Month. Take a moment to review this list of highly-rated charities working on this issue all year round.
Following the atrocities committed during and prior to World War II, the fledgling United Nations sought to establish a global commitment to the rights of humanity. The UN subsequently proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10th, 1948. Its opening words are simple; however, they were a stark departure from the paradigm of individual states and institutions protecting the interests of their own, often at the expense of another. The proclamation officially recognized that "... the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world".

December 10th is now recognized as Universal Human Rights Day, and the full month of December is dedicated to human and civil rights by the international community. A huge swath of the nonprofit sector is dedicated to protecting and upholding the rights of all humans. Charity Navigator applauds and celebrates the organizations working on these critical issues, including these highly-rated organizations that focus on human and civil rights:

Equal Justice Initiative ☆☆☆
Provides Legal Representation

The Equal Justice Initiative is a private, nonprofit organization that provides legal representation to indigent defendants and prisoners who have been denied fair and just treatment in the legal system. We litigate on behalf of condemned prisoners, juvenile offenders, people wrongly convicted or charged with violent crimes, poor people denied effective representation, and others whose trials are marked by racial bias or prosecutorial misconduct. EJI works with communities that have been marginalized by poverty and discouraged by unequal treatment.

American Civil Liberties Union Foundation ☆☆☆

Because freedom can't protect itself

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Foundation is the arm of the ACLU that conducts litigation and communication efforts. The Foundation provides legal presentation in cases involving issues of civil liberties and constitutional rights ranging from administrative hearings to trials and appeals. In addition, the Foundation educates the public as to civil liberties and constitutional rights by disseminating literature and other publications. The ACLU Foundation preserves and promotes civil rights and liberties as guaranteed by the United States Constitution.

Urgent Action Fund for Women's Human Rights ☆☆☆

Protecting, strengthening, and sustaining women's and LGBTQ human rights activist throughout the world

Urgent Action Fund for Women's Human Rights is a rapid response fund that supports women's LGBTQ human rights defenders as they create cultures of justice, equality and peace. Using online, voicemail, and SMS-based funding applications, Urgent Action Fund responds to all requests within 24 to 72 hours, and grantees have funds in hand within one to seven days. Urgent Action Fund's rapid response grants support the resilience of movements by protecting activists who face immediate threats and by supporting advocacy when windows of opportunity emerge to set new legal or policy precedents. Since its founding, Urgent Action Fund has awarded more than 1,300 rapid response grants, totaling more than $5 million, to advance women's and LGBTQ human rights in 110 countries worldwide.

Human Rights Watch ☆☆☆

Defending and protecting human rights

Human Rights Watch is one of the world's leading independent organizations dedicated to defending and protecting human rights. By focusing international attention where human rights are violated, we give voice to the oppressed and hold oppressors accountable for their crimes. Our rigorous, objective investigations and strategic, targeted advocacy build intense pressure for action and raise the cost of human rights abuse. For 30 years, Human Rights Watch has worked tenaciously to lay the legal and moral groundwork for deep-rooted change and has fought to bring greater justice and security to people around the world.

I always check Charity Navigator before deciding to donate. Clear evaluation of “money to goal.” I also want ho know how many (millions) dollars they spend on CEOs.
