“Rage Giving”: How to Find a Charity that Turns Your Rage into Action

This guest post was written by our friend Danielle Cheesman.

“Don’t go to bed angry.” It’s the divisive recommendation that couples (usually newly
cohabitating, engaged or married) have received since time immemorial, long enough
that many have rightfully begun to question whether the advice is sage or
shortsighted—with the latter arguing that, on the contrary, a clearer head is the clearer

But when it comes to altruism, might we argue that being angry is, in fact, a welcomed

Why Millennials Need to Start Thinking About Philanthropy

Written by our friend Bruna Nessif.

The label of “millennial” can sometimes seem like a curse. We’d be lying if we said there wasn’t a slight twinge of shame for being associated as a millennial, due to the onslaught of criticism we receive, but we’d also be lying if we didn’t acknowledge the impact that we’ve cultivated as a generation.

It’s no surprise that we live in a time where those before us find solace in talking down to millennials. We’re often called entitled and spoiled. We’re told that we don’t know the value of work ethic and have no regard when it comes to putting in the time and effort to earn our place.

Sure, you’re always going to have your pick of the bunch that confirm these opinions, but for the most part, millennials are being targeted because they’ve found the courage to trek uncharted territory when it comes to both their personal and professional lives. We’re not doing it like it’s always been done, because we have the resources to try something new. So why wouldn’t we take advantage of that?

What is #GivingTuesday?

Thanksgiving is almost here! In two days we'll be gathering around our dining room tables to enjoy a meal with family and friends. And, just as we finish digesting, many of us will hop in our cars and head off to malls and shopping centers to participate in another great American tradition... Black Friday shopping!

Black Friday leads into Small Business Saturday, a time to shop local and support businesses in your backyard. Small Business Saturday makes way for Cyber Monday, the time when we all scour the internet looking for deals on flights and appliances. And now, Cyber Monday ushers in #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving back.

But what does that mean? What is #GivingTuesday?

How Does the New Law Affect My Giving to Charity?

Many people choose to make their charitable contributions at the end of the calendar year between Thanksgiving and December 31. Our friends at the National Association of Enrolled Agents contributed this guest post to help you understand how recent changes to the tax code may affect your charitable giving.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) ushered in sweeping changes to the tax code that, among other things, increased the amount of money that you can give to charity and take a deduction. Individuals may now deduct charitable contributions of up to 60% of adjusted gross income as compared to 50% last year. So why are analysts forecasting a sharp drop in charitable giving this year?

A Reflection: Why I Give Back

Resilient Response: A Necessary Shift in Disaster Giving

This guest post was written by our friend Shari Rudolph, Chief Marketing Officer at Good360.

With both the frequency and intensity of natural disasters on the rise around the globe, there’s an urgent need for a more thoughtful approach to the way we respond and help impacted communities recover. Launched in mid-September on the heels of Hurricane Florence and on the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Maria, the Resilient Response initiative is a coalition initially formed by All Hands and Hearts - Smart Response and Good360 (both 4-star charities), along with Global Citizen, a nonprofit whose vision is to end extreme poverty by 2030.

The Resilient Response Initiative is dedicated to the full lifecycle of recovery of communities affected by natural disasters and sheds light on the crucial and immediate need to adjust disaster-giving behaviors among corporations and individuals to better support response and long-term recovery.

Here's How One Charity is Exciting Youth to Make a Difference

Students collecting goods for WE Charity's WE Scare Hunger campaign.

This guest post was written by our friend Scott Baker, the Executive Director of WE Charity, an organization that has a found a unique approach to getting youth involved in their local, national, and global communities.

In a few weeks, streets across the nation will teem with superheroes and monsters. Don’t be surprised when some of the Black Panthers and Harry Potters who ring your doorbell ask for a tin of beans or a box of cereal as well as a chocolate bar.

Every year, youth across North America celebrate Halloween by taking part in the WE Scare Hunger campaign, collecting millions of pounds of food for their local food banks—adding canned goods to their candy haul.

WE Charity began more than 20 years ago as an international development organization, fighting child labor by tackling the underlying poverty that causes it. However, we also realized that, if you really want a better world, you also have to change attitudes here at home, too. The Dalai Lama once observed: “The greatest threat to our world is [that] we're raising a generation of passive bystanders.”

The Paris Call for Trust & Security: How to Own Your Digital Citizenship

We live in an increasingly digital world and we are all, whether we like it or not, digital citizens. We spend the majority of our time interacting in the digital space. We work online, shop online, and communicate online.

As the world becomes more and more digital, the threat of cyber attacks and cyber warfare increases as well. At Charity Navigator, we believe that we can’t live in fear of these things, but we can take a stand against them. That’s why we’re helping to spread the word about the Paris Call for Trust and Security, and Microsoft’s subsequent Digital Peace Now Initiative. This movement is intended to raise awareness around the need for increased and improved cybersecurity, and encourage people to put an end to cyber warfare and take actions to keep cyber attacks from spreading into the physical world.

Does Impact Information Affect How You Give?

During Giving Season 2017, Charity Navigator partnered with several organizations helping charities measure and report on the impact of their programs. This ‘impact-related’ information takes many forms. Some partners look to help charities determine how their projects and programs will affect their respective populations. Others attempt to more deeply evaluate the structure of charities’ programs, including on-site technical assistance visits to better understand organizational operating procedures.

Ideally, these actions provide important information for donor decisions related to charity performance and the progress being made toward organizational goals and objectives. These approaches allow a potential donor to see a leading indicator of how their donation will help address the problems the charity is trying to solve.

How to Become a Long-Term Partner in Disaster Recovery

Following any disaster, we experience that knee-jerk reaction to give. We see photos and footage of communities devastated by an unpredictable flood, earthquake, or fire and want to help. We imagine ourselves and our families in the situation and our hearts break.

But what happens after the water recedes, the debris has been cleared, and the news crews leave?

Pink Ribbon Products: Should You Buy Them?

Each October, it seems like we’re suddenly presented with two versions of the things we want to buy: the product we know and love, and the product we know and love plus a pink ribbon and a promise to support breast cancer research. Who wouldn’t choose the second one? Those pink ribbons are a symbol of solidarity and support.

But, are they also a marketing tool? They seem to be everywhere--coffee cups, workout tops, cans of soda, and hair products. Just this weekend I passed a car dealership with pink ribbons in the windows, and pink balloons on each car. Do these businesses and corporations genuinely care about raising breast cancer awareness and funds to support research, or are they just riding the wave of pink ribbon popularity?

Take a Stand Against Domestic Violence This October

Ten million people in the United States will be abused by an intimate partner this year. This chilling reality is the reason we observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month each October. This month, which grew out of the Day of Unity founded in 1981, is intended to raise awareness, empower victims, and connect advocates to end domestic violence.

The women’s movement and victim’s rights movement along with the dedicated work of advocates and organizations like the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, National Network to End Domestic Violence, and Domestic Violence Intervention Services, Inc. have helped victims find their voices and shape the conversation to raise awareness of domestic violence and make it a thing of the past.

Everything’s Bigger in Texas: The Nonprofit Optimization and Innovation Summit

If you’re in the nonprofit space, you know the fated truth about the sector: there is a nonprofit conference for anything. Belong in a nonprofit federation? Check. Looking for direct marketing? Done. Have a desire to learn about nonprofit technology? It’s there.

But having been in the sector for several years, I’ve only heard of one tried and true summit devoted to focusing on the best and brightest on nonprofit marketing (and to help nonprofits grow, test, learn, expand, and develop). In two days. In Texas. The Nonprofit Innovation and Optimization Summit.

This year, Charity Navigator was invited to attend the 2018 NIO Summit to discuss the awesome stories that are fed through the beautiful San Antonio venue of the Aztec Theatre. As a nonprofit marketer myself, one of the first sessions stuck out to me. Jamie Blomquist of Google’s Marketing Solutions presented on “Forward Fundraising - Aligning Strategy and Spend with Changing Behavior.” If you’ve gotten this far in my blog post, and don’t happen to work for a nonprofit, this post is for you, too.

WE Day is Uniting Youth to Make a Difference

Sarah Michelle Gellar onstage at WE Day UN

Imagine waking up every morning intending to make it easier for anyone and everyone to get involved in making the world a better place.  As the Chief Operating Officer of Charity Navigator, I like to believe that this is my job. Then I met Craig Kielburger who, at age 12, decided that he needed to eliminate oppressive child labor policies that are destroying young lives. Craig enlisted his older brother, Marc and the two of them set off to change the world. What they created is the large, well-managed, and international WE Charity. I wouldn’t have imagined that two teens could deliver on such an extraordinary mission. Then I sat down with Craig.

We all eat. We need farmers.

Farmers’ hands sustain us. They grow the vegetables we turn into salads, the fruits that we snack on, and the grains that become our flour. They raise the animals whose milk we drink, cheese we eat, and the meat we prepare.

We depend on farmers. But who can farmers depend on when volatile weather threatens their harvest and shifts in the agricultural economy jeopardize their livelihood?

Last week, I had the opportunity to speak with Jennifer Fahy, Communications Director at Farm Aid. We spoke for almost an hour about the organization and the work they’re doing to support family farmers and strengthen their economy. Somewhere in the middle of our conversation, she said simply, “We all eat. We need farmers.” I scribbled the statement down in my notebook in all caps. Traced it and retraced it with my pen. Underlined it, and drew a large, dark box around it.

We all eat. We need farmers.

Her statement resonated deeply within me because I’m the daughter and granddaughter of family farmers. I know it’s true.

The Power of Volunteers

As the East Coast braces for and recovers from what some experts have called a "storm of a lifetime," Charity Navigator is remembering the 2017 hurricane season. Just one year ago, three of the most powerful, destructive, and expensive hurricanes ever recorded--Harvey, Irma, and Maria--tore through the Caribbean, the Gulf Coast, and the Southeastern United States. Within just a few weeks of one another, these storms pummeled hundreds of communities leaving a trail of in their paths.

In the immediate wake of each storm, disaster response organizations were on the ground and calling in additional staff to begin delivering aid and relief in the affected communities. Donations poured in from individuals in the United States and around the world. And then came the volunteers. Volunteers from all walks of life descended on the affected areas to partner with response groups to begin the recovery process. They handed out food and supplies, manned temporary shelters, and began tearing down and rebuilding homes.

Keep reading to learn a little bit more about the power of volunteers following a crisis or disaster.
