Highly-Rated Charities Helping Victims of the California Mudslides

Just weeks after devastating wildfires ripped through the hills of Southern California, the area was hit with massive rain storms that dumped inches of rain and caused disastrous mudslides.

The mudslides, concentrated in Santa Barbara County, have affected much of the oceanside community of Montecito. Homes have been destroyed, 17 people have been reported dead and 43 are missing, while hundreds more are waiting to be rescued. Rescuers are digging through feet of mud and debris to find survivors and free those who have been trapped and blocked off from evacuating by the mudslides.

In case you missed it, Ellen DeGeneres FaceTimed Oprah earlier this week to discuss the devastation in Montecito, where the two are neighbors.

It will take time for the affected communities to dig out, clean up, and begin repairing the damage caused by these devastating mudslides. Two highly-rated organizations, Direct Relief and ShelterBox USA, have confirmed that they are working in the area to support those affected by the mudslides. Consider supporting one of these highly-rated organizations that are working on the ground with victims to help them return home and get back on their feet.

Direct Relief
Delivering a world of good

Direct Relief is headquartered in Santa Barbara and the organization is working to help its neighbors recover from the devastating flooding and mudslides. A representative from the organization said, “This one actually hits close to home for Direct Relief.” MSN recently ran a story about the organization’s CEO who’s home was washed away in the flooding.

Delivering emergency shelter to people affected by disaster and conflict worldwide

From a representative at ShelterBox USA, “The ShelterBox USA Office in Montecito, CA is impacted by the floods and currently is closed due to search and rescue efforts in the surrounding area, with all employees working from alternate locations. ShelterBox USA has a limited supply of equipment such as tents, solar lights, blankets, and water purifiers the Montecito location and has offered any of our available stock to first responders to the mudslides in California.”

More charities will be added to this list as we learn about their recovery efforts. If you are interested in supporting victims of the 2017 wildfires in Southern and Northern California, please find more information here.
