Charity Navigator's Cross-Country Tour: Arkansas

Each week Charity Navigator “stops” in a new state as part of our efforts to highlight outstanding charities across the country. This week we’re in Arkansas!

In addition to hosting the only publicly-accessible diamond-bearing site in the world, Arkansas, the Natural State, is home to beautiful mountains, forests, and rivers. It is also home to a number of highly-rated charities working hard to support the people, communities, and environment of this great state.

Our House, Arkansas (Little Rock, AR)
Hope for the working homeless

Our House provides working homeless adults and children with housing, job training, education, and children's programs in order to equip them with the skills to be successful in the workforce, in the community, and in their own families. Our House has a licensed child development center for homeless children in Arkansas. There are also out of school-time programs: after school, summer, spring break, and more. State-licensed adult education instructors teach in the Adult Learning Center. Job training, financial literacy and other programs are available for all residents. Families stay connected to Our House for a year after moving out. We serve over 1,400 men, women and children each year. Of those, at least 75% move out of homelessness.

Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund (Springdale, AR)
Opening a world of opportunity

In recognition of the severe impoverishment of single-parent families in Arkansas, the Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund (ASPSF) was established in 1990. Modeled on successful incentive scholarship funds in two northwest Arkansas counties, the goal of the ASPSF is to assist low-income single parents to complete their post-secondary education in preparation for skilled employment. Our strategy is to work at the county level to organize affiliate scholarship funds operated by local residents and provide on-site assistance with all phases of affiliate development.

Camp Aldersgate (Little Rock, AR)
Common ground for extraordinary people

Camp Aldersgate is uniquely dedicated to serving children with disabilities, youth and senior adults in a camp environment. We maintain a high standard of excellence in all aspects of our programming, service, environment and operations. Our work is guided by the needs and potential of each person. We offer camps for children and youth who have conditions such as cancer, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, diabetes, arthritis, asthma, epilepsy, kidney disorders, autism, Down syndrome, and mental retardation. Hundreds of campers come each year from across Arkansas and from surrounding states to enjoy an experience of a lifetime.

Museum of Discovery (Little Rock, AR)
To ignite passion

The Museum of Discovery's mission is to ignite a passion for science, technology, and math in a dynamic, interactive environment. The museum was originally accredited by the American Association of Museums in 1993 and was re-accredited in 2001. During the period between its founding and its accreditation, the museum actively collected approximately 14,000 cultural and historical artifacts and numerous species of live animals and insects. In the 1970s, in-museum and outreach programs were developed, utilizing both the collections and the museum's exhibits.

Children’s Home, Inc. (Paragould, AR)
A rainbow of hope for children need

Children's Home, Inc. is a faith-based organization that provides therapeutic care for children and families in need through family-style residential care, foster care, and adoptive services. Our mission is to provide a substitute home for dependent and neglected children and to restore the broken lives of children and families.
