Charity Navigator's Cross-Country Tour: Georgia

Heading north from Florida, Charity Navigator is making the next stop on our cross-country tour in Georgia. Each week we take a look at a few of the highly-rated charities serving the people and places in a new state.

From the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean, Georgia, also known as the Peach State, is home to beautiful landscapes and diverse communities. Take a few moments to learn more about some of the state's outstanding organizations.

Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (Atlanta, GA)
Keeping watch over our waters

The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper's (CRK) works to advocate and secure the protection and stewardship of the Chattahoochee River, its tributaries and watershed, in order to restore and preserve their ecological health for the people, fish and wildlife that depend on the River system. Established in 1994, CRK is an environmental advocacy organization with more than 6,000 members dedicated solely to protecting and restoring the Chattahoochee River Basin - drinking water source for 4 million people. CRK actively uses advocacy, education, research, communication, cooperation, monitoring and legal actions to protect and preserve the Chattahoochee and its watershed.

Furkids (Atlanta, GA)
☆☆☆ + Impact
Georgia’s largest animal rescue and no-kill shelter

Furkids, headquartered in Atlanta, GA, operates the largest cage-free, no-kill shelter in the Southeast for rescued cats, and Sadie's Place, a no-kill shelter for dogs. Furkids also operates one of the only facilities in the Southeast dedicated to the care of FIV positive cats. The Furkids mission is to rescue homeless animals, provide them with the best medical care and nurturing environment while working to find them a forever home. Furkids heals the whole animal, physically and emotionally, restoring its health and its spirit.

Our House, Georgia (Decatur, GA)
A child care and support center for homeless families

Our House breaks the chains of homelessness by providing quality early childhood education and comprehensive support services for families who are experiencing homelessness. Our House founders envisioned offering homeless parents more than free childcare: they wanted to provide a loving, safe haven where a parent could confidently leave her child while she sought employment and permanent housing. They realized that without reliable childcare, homeless parents, especially single women, were trapped in the cycle of unemployment, poverty and homelessness.

Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education (Atlanta, GA)
Informing and influencing Georgia leaders to impact education policies and practices

The Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education works to inform and influence Georgia leaders through research. We use non-partisan advocacy to impact education policies and practices for the improvement of student achievement. Founded in 1990 by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Economic Developers Association, the Partnership consists of business, education, community and government leaders who share a vision of improved education. Working to be Georgia's foremost change agent in education, we take the lead in efforts to shape policy and reform education.

Fugees Family (Scottdale, GA)
☆☆☆ + Impact
Empowering child survivors of war in rebuilding their lives one step at a time

Fugees Family Inc. is devoted to working with child survivors of war. The organization empowers refugees to integrate successfully into their new country by providing them the support and structure they need to realize their vast potential. The Fugees Academy serves a pressing need not currently being met by Georgia's traditional public education system – the education of refugee children in an environment that understands their unique academic challenges.

I am grateful that you will be visiting at least some of the southeast of the US. I give to animal welfare charities mostly via Charity Navigator. Laws in parts of the southeastern US for the safety and care of animals in need are almost nonexistent. The laws need to improve, attitudes toward non-human animals need to improve all over the world, and in this country, the southeast needs the most change and progress. Thank you!
