Charity Navigator's Top 10 Tuesday: Protecting & Defending Our Oceans

Each week Charity Navigator publishes a new Top 10 list of highly-rated charities working on a particular cause or issue. With a heatwave impacting much of the country, there seems like no better time to feature a few of the awesome organizations that are working to protect and defend our oceans for the animals and people who rely on them.

For those of us along the coast, the ocean is a source of income for many as well as a place to relax and cool. But ocean affects us all, including those in inland communities. Find out more about what these organizations are doing to keep our oceans clean and healthy for the animals who live in them and the people who enjoy them.

Clean Ocean Action
Making waves to save our seas

Clean Ocean Action (COA) is a broad-based coalition of 125 active boating, business, community, conservation, diving, environmental, fishing, religious, service, student, surfing, and women’s groups. Together, these “Ocean Wavemakers” work to clean up and protect New York and New Jersey’s coastal marine waters. COA staff researches pollution issues affecting the marine environment, then formulates policy and campaigns to eliminate each pollution source. Their goal is to improve the degraded quality of the waters surrounding New York and New Jersey, making them healthier for places for the animals who call them home and the people who rely on them.

Surfrider Foundation
The Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves, and beaches through a powerful activist network

The Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves, and beaches through a powerful activist network. Their national network of chapter volunteers serves as the first response to local threats in coastal communities across the United States. The Foundation firmly believes “our ocean and special places must be proactively protected before they are threatened and stem the tide before further damage is done to the ocean’s health.”

Coral Reef Alliance
☆☆☆☆ + Impact
United communities to save coral reefs

Founded in 1994 to unite the diving community around conservation, Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) has grown from a small, grassroots alliance into a world-renowned organization with a history of successfully working with local communities in coral reef regions around the world to protect their coral reefs. They believe that for conservation to be sustainable, interventions must be aligned with the social, cultural, and economic needs of each community.

Ocean Discovery Institute
☆☆☆☆ + Impact
Young lives transformed through science

Founded in 1999, Ocean Discovery Institute addresses a national crisis in science education--one particularly acute in underserved communities. Their solution is to deliver rigorous educational, scientific research, and environmental stewardship experiences that build curiosity, scientific understanding and skills, and leadership in underserved young people from kid to career. They work in San Diego’s City Heights district to provide students with unique, hands-on ocean science learning experiences to spark their educational excitement.

Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences
☆☆☆☆ + Impact
Blue biotechnology, ocean biogeochemistry and climate change, and ocean health

The Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences investigates the microbial drivers of global ocean processes through basic and applied research, education, and enterprise. Their findings are essential to conservation work and determining guidelines for responsible ocean use. The Laboratory’s strength lies in the expertise and dedication of its senior research scientists, science and administrative staff, and their Board of Trustees and advisors.

The Marine Mammal Center
We are guided and inspired by a shared vision of a healthy ocean for marine mammals and humans alike

The Marine Mammal Center is committed to advancing global ocean conservation through marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation, scientific research, and education. According to the Center, their work is “more than kind-hearted consideration for the well-being of other living creatures. [They] recognize the fundamental relationship that binds humans, animals, and the oceans. Covering more than 70% of our planet, the ocean is Earth’s primary life-support system--these animals are critical bellwethers of its health. By caring for them, [they] care for all life.”

Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences
Ocean science for human good

The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) was founded more than 100 years ago. Since then, they’ve grown from a small marine biological center and field station to a world-class ocean science research and education facility. The researchers at BIOS are committed to using their science to benefit people and communities around the world, providing resources and knowledge that can be used by government representatives, environmental management officials, community leaders, and everyday citizens to make the planet a better place to live.

Ocean Institute
Experience is the teacher

Located in Orange County, California, the Ocean Institute is a community-based organization that educates more than 250,000 visitors annually through their marine science and maritime history programs. The Institute includes state-of-the-art teaching labs, the spectacular Maddie James Seaside Learning Center, two historic tallships, and oceanographic vessel. All programs are designed to maximize immersion, spark curiosity, and inspire a deep commitment to learning.

Marine Conservation Institute
☆☆☆ + Impact
Saving wild ocean places, for us and future generations

The Marine Conservation Institute is dedicated to securing permanent, strong protection for the oceans’ most important places. As a leader in the global movement to protect vast ocean areas, Marine Conservation Institute uses the latest science to identify important marine ecosystems and advocate for their protection. They work with scientists, politicians, government officials and other organizations to build workable solutions to pressing ocean issues.

Ocean Alliance
Experience is the teacher

Ocean Alliance strives to increase public awareness of the importance of whale and ocean health through research and public education. They work with scientific partners to collect a broad spectrum of data on whales and ocean life. The Alliance uses this data to advise educators, policymakers, and the general public on wise stewardship of the oceans to mitigate pollution, prevent the collapse of marine mammal populations, and promote ocean and human health.
