5 Charities Fighting for Workers' Rights

For many, Labor Day marks the end of summer. We wrap up vacations and enjoy one final long, lazy summer weekend before returning to our normal routines: school, work, sports, etc.

But the holiday, which has been celebrated nationwide since 1894, is meant to be more than just a day off. In the late 1800s, a number of labor unions proposed setting aside a day each year to recognize and celebrate the work of laborers across all industries. The idea was quickly adopted and soon became a federal holiday.

In honor of Labor Day and the celebration of workers across the country, Charity Navigator is featuring 5 highly-rated organizations that advocate for the rights of workers. These charities seek to provide all employees with safe workplaces where they can earn living wages to support their families and, ultimately, give back to society. Keep reading to learn more...

Is My Donation Tax Deductible?

We give to organizations working on the causes we care about because we want to make the world a better place. But, we don’t need to kid ourselves, a tax-deduction is always nice too.

When it comes to your charitable giving, you’ve probably come across terms like 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and PAC. They sound so serious and technical, but what do they mean? We’re breaking down the differences here and what they mean for the tax-deductibility of your donations.

Here's Why Funding Long-Term Disaster Relief is Important

In the immediate wake of any crisis or disaster, generosity knows no limits. Donations flood in to help victims and communities get the resources and supplies they need to survive and begin the recovery process. Not long after the news crews and cameras leave, however, those donations turn from a flood into a trickle. Organizations continuing work on the ground have fewer resources to fund ongoing recovery efforts that often take many months, if not years.

At Charity Navigator, we encourage donors to see themselves as partners with the organizations you support. This includes the charities you contribute to in the wake of a disaster. Keep reading to learn more about what it means to be a charitable partner in long-term disaster recovery and why it’s important to the organizations you support and the communities they work in.

3 Unexpected Needs Following a Disaster

At Charity Navigator, we aim to provide you with the giving tips you need to make confident donations in any situation, including the immediate wake of a disaster. Last year, following Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria thousands of donors, like you, turned to us for a list of highly-rated charities providing relief and support on the ground. We were blown away by the generosity and quick response of so many people seeking to help their neighbors.

Through our Giving Basket, we directed relief funds to effective organizations known to be working on the ground. Those organizations turned much of that funding into immediate relief: meals, medicine, hygiene kits, pet supplies, tools and construction materials. Those items are critical, but they only address short-term needs. Recovery following a disaster can take many months, or even years and the long-term needs change over time. Keep reading to see three unexpected long-term needs following a disaster.

A Sweet Moment: How Students Unexpectedly Donated $2k via Charity Navigator

I know I speak for the entire Charity Navigator Team when I say we love hearing from our users and donors! We appreciate the time they take to write, call, or email us to tell us about how they use our ratings and tools make confident giving decisions, or how they used our resources to find their new favorite charity.

We get a similar rush of joy and excitement when we hear from charities who find creative ways to share their ratings, celebrate their inclusion in a Hot Topic or Top 10 list, or offer stories of donors who found them using Charity Navigator.

Recently, our friends at ReadWorks shared a few of their “Charity Navigator moments” with us. We were so inspired by one of their stories that we asked to share it with our readers. We believe it speaks to the power of Charity Navigator to connect donors with effective organizations working on the issues that matter most to them, as well as to the world-changing potential of those new donor-charity relationships.

We hope it will inspire you too!

Your Guide to Deducting Donated Goods

Recently, we’ve been sharing creative ways to make an impact on any budget. We’ve shared tips for supporting your local homeless shelter and food bank, ideas for starting a school supply drive, suggestions for places to volunteer, and a guide to making the most of your charitable giving budget. Another great way to support local organizations, regardless of your budget, is by donating gently-used goods like books, furniture, and toys, and lightly-worn clothing to be distributed to individuals and families who can use them.

We can all open our closets right now and pull out 5 or 6 things we’ll never wear again. Or, point to the toys our children have lost interest in or are too old to play with. Why not donate them to a neighbor in need? Plus, these items qualify for a tax deduction when you donate them through a local tax-deductible organization.

Here’s what you need to know about deducting donated goods…
