5 Celebrities Lending Their Voices to Animals

You’ve heard it said, “Celebrities -- they’re just like us!” While their day-to-day lives may look very different, they care about making the world a better place like we do.

Keep reading to learn about 5 celebrities who are lending their voices to animals to bring an end to animal cruelty and advocate for their rights in the United States and around the world.

Ellen DeGeneres
Ellen DeGeneres is a long-time supporter of a number of animal rights in the United States and around the world. Earlier this year, Ellen’s wife surprised her with a generous gift to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund to help the organization build a permanent outpost in Rwanda for their work with mountain gorillas.

When asked about the gift, Ellen said, “I’ve always been passionate about helping animals. Nobody knows this more than my wife, and she knew the exact right gift to give me… I’m beyond excited to get to work with the Fossey Fund to support their work and help protect these amazing animals.”

In 2017, Ellen announced a campaign to benefit The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust USA and their elephant conservation efforts. She also made a generous gift to the SPCA of Texas in the wake of Hurricane Harvey to help animals that we injured, lost, or abandoned during the storm.

Leonardo DiCaprio
Leonardo DiCaprio was named an honorary board member and global ambassador to protect elephants by the International Fund for Animal Welfare. He said, “Elephants, tigers, and other wildlife are in crisis due to poaching, habitat loss and human activities. That’s why public education is important.”

Through grantmaking, public campaigns, and media projects, Leonardo works to bring much-needed attention and funding to protecting biodiversity, ocean and forest conservation, and climate change. His foundation has made more than $10 million in grants to projects that protect fragile ecosystems and endangered species around the world. He takes advantage of his celebrity to raise awareness of a number of issues like protecting sharks and elephants to advocating for clean, renewable energy.

Kesha has always been passionate about helping animals. That’s why the Humane Society International named her as their first global ambassador. She works with the organization to promote respect, protection, and compassion for animals.

One of Kesha’s primary interests is helping homeless or abandoned street dogs in the United States and around the world. She said, “In my travels, I’ve seen many dogs living on the streets. On one trip, I found two dogs who had literally been superglued together… this was on an island with no vet, no shelter, no resources to help [them]... HSI’s street dog programs can really make a difference in the lives of these animals.”

She also works to raise awareness for trophy hunting, shark finning, seal slaughtering, and dogfighting.

Betty White
Our favorite Golden Girl, Betty White, has been known for her stance on animal rights for a very long time. She has turned down roles in shows and films if they feature animal mistreatment or abuse.

Betty partners with the Wilderness Society to highlight the importance of their work to promote animal protection and environmental conservation. She says she was shaped by a family trip to the Sierra Nevada mountains when she was a child. Even at a young age, she said the area was, “...as close to Heaven as you can get on this earth.”

Ryan Gosling
Ryan Gosling made news when he and Brad Pitt joined together to write a letter, on behalf of PETA, to the CEO of Costco urging him to stop purchasing eggs and other chicken products that came from farms and producers that mistreat chickens.

He wrote similar letters to the leaders of McDonald’s and KFC asking them to consider using only cage-free and cruelty-free eggs in their meals.

Ryan is joined by a long list of celebrities who also support the work of PETA and their campaigns to end animal cruelty.
