America's 10 Best Medical Research Organizations

Every Tuesday, Charity Navigator features a new list of ten outstanding organizations working on a particular cause or issue. This week we're highlighting America's ten most highly-rated medical research organizations.

These charities are committed to funding cutting-edge research and finding breakthroughs for a spectrum of conditions and diseases. They are also dedicated to using donors funds wisely in their journey to find a cure.

National Pediatric Cancer Foundation
☆☆☆☆ + Impact
Rise up for a faster cure

Founded in 1991, the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation exists to raise money to fund pediatric cancer research. Their focus is to fund research which will lead to the elimination of pediatric cancer worldwide. In addition to funding valuable seed grants throughout the state of Florida, the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation has developed The Sunshine Project. This is an innovative collaboration of the nation's top doctors and researchers with one goal: to fast-track new treatments and increase the survival rate of children battling cancer. Since 2005, they have implemented the groundwork necessary to introduce less toxic, more targeted drugs into clinical trials. New compounds are currently being tested in these trials and hold great promise for children who have not experienced positive results under the standard treatment protocol.

Cure Alzheimer’s Fund
☆☆☆☆ + Impact
Targeting breakthrough research

Cure Alzheimer's Fund was established to fund targeted research with the highest probability of slowing, stopping or reversing Alzheimer's disease through venture based philanthropy. All organizational expenses are paid for by the Founders and Board, allowing all other contributions to be applied directly to Alzheimer's Disease research. Their foundational research is focused on identifying all the genes and gene mutations that are linked to Alzheimer's Disease. They use this genetic information to reliably predict, early in life, those at greatest risk for the disease (with legal safeguards and genetic and psychological counseling). Their foundational research projects include Alzheimer's Genome Project, Alzheimer's Genome Map, Alzheimer's Brain-Genetic Study, Alzheimer's Clinical-Genetic Study, Alzheimer's Gene Database, MicroRNA's and APP, and Alzheimer's Gene Discovery Project.

The Arthritis National Research Foundation provides arthritis research grants to scientists at major universities and research institutes across America. One- and two-year arthritis research grants allow these newer scientists to develop their important research to a stage where it can be continued and further supported by other national agencies.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation
☆☆☆☆ + Impact

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation was started by her parents in 2005 to continue the work that Alex began.
