4 Charities Making an Impact in the Fight Against Breast Cancer

We all know someone--a mother, sister, daughter, aunt, or friend--who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Some of us may have even been on the receiving end of that diagnosis. In the blink of an eye, everything changes. Life seems less certain, and time feels more precious as we, or someone we love, face one of life’s toughest battles.

That is why each October we observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s a time to celebrate survivors, remember those who lost their battle against breast cancer and bring critical attention to this disease that will affect 1 in 8 women.

There are a number of highly-rated charities hard at work in October and throughout the year providing education and resources to women to help them reduce their risk of breast cancer, offering medical services and social support to those who have received a diagnosis, and funding cutting-edge research to find a cure for this disease.

With so many organizations focused on this important cause, it can be hard to know where to donate. Charity Navigator’s ratings and Impact Reports are here to help donors give confidently by providing you with the resources you need to make more informed giving decisions. Keep reading to learn more about four charities that are making an impact in the fight against breast cancer.

Breast cancer seems to touch all of our lives in some way. We want to help find a cure and support women who are battling the disease. But, at a time of the year when those familiar pink ribbons are everywhere, it can be hard to know which charities are worthy of our support.

Last November, Charity Navigator--in partnership with Classy, GlobalGiving, and GuideStar--launched an initiative to provide Impact Reports for nearly 3,000 charities. These reports are publicly available through charities’ rating profiles and provide detailed information about a charity’s programs and outcomes.

The following charities have received a 3- or 4-star rating from Charity Navigator and have submitted impact reporting which has been vetted by one of our partners. We selected these charities based on the unique problems they are trying to solve, but we strongly encourage you to take a look at our full list of charities before making a donation.

The Rose (☆☆☆☆) provides prevention education, early detection screenings, and medical services to insured and uninsured women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer in Southeast Texas. The organization reports a steady increase in the demand for their services, while philanthropic support for their programs has weakened over time. To combat this trend and continue helping the women who rely on their services, The Rose has increased its capacity to serve insured women so they can raise revenue to offset the costs of serving the uninsured.

Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation (☆☆☆☆) is a leader in breast cancer research. One of the problems they are actively working to solve is reducing the stigma associated with cancer in minority communities and encouraging their participation in clinical research. This will enable the Foundation and its research partners to conduct more inclusive research that will allow them to identify targeted treatments and improve access to health care for different racial groups.

Casting for Recovery (☆☆☆☆) provides women diagnosed with breast cancer and those in recovery with social support through one-of-a-kind fly-fishing retreats. Why fly fishing? The gentle motion of fly casting can be good physical therapy for increasing mobility in the arms and the upper body, the areas that are most affected during breast cancer treatment. The organization provides these retreats at no cost to participants. 99% of participants report that the retreats are beneficial in helping them build relationships, and find the inspiration and encouragement they need to continue their fight or their walk toward recovery.

Breast Cancer Prevention Partners (☆☆☆) is focused on the link between the toxic chemicals and radiation we encounter every day and breast cancer. They are committed to educating the public about these substances and how we can reduce our exposure to them. And, they with governmental agencies to create progressive public policies that will help to reduce the number of environmental hazards at a national level. The organization tracks their progress toward raising awareness, expanding education, and policy change through quarterly reports to stakeholders.

This October, before you donate, take a look at Charity Navigator’s Breast Cancer Awareness Hot Topic. This list includes 25 highly-rated charities that are funding cutting-edge research, providing prevention education and early detection services, and medical care or social support to women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

All of the charities included in our Hot Topic maintain the highest standards for financial health and accountability, and Impact Reports are available for 12 to help you make more informed giving decisions.
