World Food Day: Here's What It's All About

Most of us visit our pantries or refrigerators without ever thinking about where are food comes from. But, the story behind our food matters. Our meals represent jobs, and labor, and human hands. They are also tied to our economies and environments.

October 16 is World Food Day—a day set aside to think about the food we eat, understand the realities of world hunger, discuss our food systems, and seek innovative ways to improve them for the health of us, our neighbors, and our world.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in partnership with Charity Navigator, has created a list of highly-rated charities working create healthier, more sustainable food systems to address food insecurity around the world.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that 815 million people around the world face undernourishment or malnutrition. While the majority of these individuals live in developing, or lower-middle-income countries, some live in our own backyards.

Working to create more just and equitable food systems is essential to ending malnutrition and world hunger. It is also key to solving some of our worsening economic and environmental issues.

The theme for this year’s World Food Day is “Our actions are our future.” Our actions, as they relate to our food, have widespread consequences. Take a stand today, by supporting one of the highly-rated charities recommended by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The highly-rated charities in this Hot Topic are working to address hunger and malnutrition in innovative and sustainable ways. Learn more and consider making a gift today!
