What is #GivingTuesday?

Thanksgiving is almost here! In two days we'll be gathering around our dining room tables to enjoy a meal with family and friends. And, just as we finish digesting, many of us will hop in our cars and head off to malls and shopping centers to participate in another great American tradition... Black Friday shopping!

Black Friday leads into Small Business Saturday, a time to shop local and support businesses in your backyard. Small Business Saturday makes way for Cyber Monday, the time when we all scour the internet looking for deals on flights and appliances. And now, Cyber Monday ushers in #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving back.

But what does that mean? What is #GivingTuesday?

In 2012, organizers at the 92Y in New York City, launched #GivingTuesday on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. They imagined creating a global giving movement by setting apart one day when people around the world would give back with their dollars, their goods, or their time to make a difference in the lives of those around them.

#GivingTuesday has grown steadily since then with more people in more countries around the world donating more time and volunteer hours every year.

Last year, individuals in more than 150 countries around the world participated in #GivingTuesday by supporting their favorite charity with a monetary gift ($300 million was raised globally!), donating used goods, or volunteering with a community-based organization.

Don't miss out - it's not too late to get involved in #GivingTuesday 2018!
