Reflections on 2019: A Letter from our CEO

Dear friends of Charity Navigator,

It's hard to believe that 2019 has come to an end--with so many firsts and new initiatives, the year seemed to fly by at Charity Navigator. This past year has been one of transformation and progress.

As I reflect on the past twelve months--what we achieved, what we learned, and where we’re going at Charity Navigator--one thing continues to ring true: we wouldn’t be the trusted resource we are today without the confidence of millions of users and the generous support of our donors.

Each year, tens of thousands of users show how much they value the ratings and tools we provide by making a donation to support our work. For that, the entire team at Charity Navigator is deeply grateful. Thank you for your generosity. As a small token of our appreciation, I’ve outlined some highlights from 2019 that you made possible.

In an effort to keep you as informed as possible on the causes close to your heart, we updated and published more than 10,000 charity ratings - this includes 228 charities who received their first Charity Navigator evaluation. We also now have a total of more than 25,000 charity profile pages displaying performance data to help you better understand the impact of your support. Additionally, in early December, we began publishing Constituent Voice data for roughly 1,000 charities to give insight on how organizations are listening and learning from the people they serve.

Charity Navigator’s Giving Basket, a platform that enables you to donate to multiple organizations in one easy transaction, continued to grow in 2019. On #GivingTuesday alone, donors directed more than $1,000,000 to 3,185 organizations through our Giving Basket! In total, $21,479,880 was donated by informed donors through the Giving Basket in 2019. We are actively working on improvements to the platform to make it even more powerful and user-friendly.

In 2019, we welcomed two new executives to our team: our Chief Relationship Officer, Kevin Scally, and our Chief Ratings Technology Officer, Stephen Rockwell. Kevin and Stephen play integral roles in helping guide the future of how we evaluate charities and share that information with you. We are excited to roll out developments on this front with you in 2020.

As part of our commitment to bring you the information and resources you need to make thoughtful, informed giving decisions, we published 26 hot topic articles, including curated lists of organizations responding to the winter flooding in the Midwest, fires in the Amazon, Hurricane Dorian, and the wildfires in California. More than $1,800,000 was donated through our Giving Basket to highly-rated nonprofits providing relief and recovery during and after these crises.

Committed to the idea that philanthropists come in all sizes, we continued to publish giving tips on our blog, like how to manage your mailbox and when to support a matching gift campaign, to help you give confidently. Other popular topics included the tax law’s effect on charitable giving, things to consider when supporting disaster recovery, and how to "tidy up" your philanthropy to maximize your impact. If you haven’t spent time with our blog, I strongly encourage you to check it out!

While it’s hard to believe the holidays are almost over, I am excited by the promise of a new year. At Charity Navigator, we are looking forward to improving our website and features to make finding the data and information you need to give confidently even easier. I hope you will stay tuned for those enhancements throughout the year, and provide your feedback with us. Together, we have the power to transform that charitable sector and make the world a better place.

On behalf of myself and the Charity Navigator team, best wishes for a bright and hopeful new year!

Cheers,

Michael Thatcher

I rely on Charity Navigator's ratings. I pretty much stick with their 4 star or close charities for my donations

Appreciate the data you provide. Use CN often...results help me decide where to donate.
