4 Ways to Safely Celebrate Independence Day This Year

Happy Fourth of July! 🇺🇸It's that time of year again where we celebrate the birth of our country. Except this year, things are a little different -- and in more ways than one. Reopening states have been put on pause as COVID-19 cases have surged. That’s why it’s more important than ever to wear a mask, stay home if you can, and celebrate the Fourth of July as safely as possible.

These are safe ways to celebrate and enjoy this Independence Day:

Celebrate with your family at home. If you’re quarantined with your family (or if you’re one of the lucky few quarantined with friends) have a BBQ, if you have access to an outdoor space. Make it a “potluck” affair.  Each person can be responsible for making a dish or dessert if you don’t want to do all the cooking. If your home is large enough, play games and watch the live broadcast of this year’s Macy’s Fireworks Show on television.  And, don’t forget to decorate. Make it festive!

Let the kids plan the day. Set some guidelines and provide a budget that the little ones and teens can operate within. They might want to build an indoor fort or set up a tent. Ask what they would like to do to celebrate Independence Day at home.

Plan a virtual movie night. You probably haven’t seen your friends in a few months, but that doesn’t mean you can’t spend time with them. Try planning a Netflix movie night where someone chooses a movie and you all watch it together over Zoom or Google Meet.

Donate to a cause that supports your values. With the recent #BlackLivesMatter protests and the COVID-19 global pandemic, there are countless nonprofits dedicated to supporting those most affected. Help these organizations by making a donation today.

If there’s one thing we’ve seen emerge during the past few months of social and global health upheaval is the generosity of the American people. We rise to any challenge and we continue to give back to those who need support the most. If that’s not American, I don’t know what is.
